Lockdown Wedding London | Asia + Rooban

Lockdown Wedding London

So 2020 has not been the best year for a lot of people and I think we could start the year again or make it go away. In terms of weddings, it has been a challenge just imagining having to change that one day you have been looking forwards too. All that planning for at least 12 months before the event. All of my couples have moved to 2021 and some have had to move it to 2023 just to get the venue and make sure COVID has been sorted by then. Some couples could not wait for the rules to be relaxed and wanted to have the best day that they could. Asia and Rooban were one of those couples, and I was so excited to be part of this day. This turned out to be my only summer weddings this year.

Brent Civic Centre

So the day started very differently this time as I would normally shoot the bride getting ready and sometimes the groom getting ready on their weddings day. We started at the registered office in Wembley which is inside the Brent civic centre. They have an amazing garden area that they conduct ceremonies. Nothing felt different apart from having to wear a mask within the registered office. As we made our way to the ceremony area, we were allowed to remove the mask as it was outside. The strange thing about this wedding was that originally the photographer was not going to be allowed into the ceremony and they allowed me to attend and take pictures which was a joy as those are some of the most special moments of the day.

So after the ceremony, we managed to get some lovely pictures within the ground of the Brent civic centre as they do have some lovely gardens which was a plus for Asia and Rooban. After the ceremony, they had planned for all the guests and some friends to go to a park to be able to have a little reception, but the weather was getting a little wild as good old British weather near does what the weather apps say. As we do we made it work and worked with what we had and created some great couples shots and then rounded the family and friends for some lovely group photo within the park. It was just a shame about the weather on the day but we did what we could at the time. I think one thing I saw on this lockdown wedding was the emotion from everyone was different.

Love a good Wedding

I think everyone was more invested in the day as the bride and groom had to do so much to get the day planned in such a short time and selected those 30 people to invited and I could not do that I have so many people that I would want at my wedding so hats of them for being able to do that. I know they are planning an evening event when parties are allowed next year so they can celebrate with the friends and family that could not come because of COVID.

Dancing was only ever meant to be a hobby for me https://www.photographybyginger.com/blog/2020/11/dancing-was-only-ever-meant-to-be-a-hobby-for-me

Dancing was only ever meant to be a hobby for me

My first memory of falling in love with dance was watching old movie musicals with my mum and grandma. I have danced since the age of 5, Ballet, Tap and Jazz, but it was watching those old movies and also attending the theatre that made me fall in love with dance. I remember watching the ballet scene in Oklahoma and the main scene in Singing in the rain and thinking that’s what I want to do.

Dancing was only ever meant to be a hobby for me. My parents didn’t want me to do it as a career, they wanted me to get “a normal job”. So originally I went to college and did my A levels, I took dance as a subject but also English Literature and Business studies too. My plan was to either own my own dance school or go into a job of administration of some sort. But I realised I loved dancing more than just as a hobby. So I applied for dance at De Montford University in Leicester but found it was very contemporary based and I had been trained in classical all my life. So I also applied for quite a few dance colleges. The problem was they were too expensive and I wasn’t talented enough to gain a scholarship. One I did get accepted for didn’t have any funding available so sadly I had to turn it down.
After that, I decided to have a gap year to think about what I wanted. I had changed dance schools during my a-levels and my new teacher took me on as her assistant. During this gap year, I had become content with teaching dance and the world of running a dance school. I think I may have stayed there had something not shaken me up. I then auditioned for Expressions Performing Arts. I got in with a quarter scholarship. Luckily I had also been working at KFC so I could afford to pay my fees. I trained there for three years on a Musical Theatre Diploma which was heavily dance-based (luckily for me). I absolutely loved every minute of training and this is where I first studied commercial dance and fell in love with it. My plan after graduation was to audition for cruises and once in with a cruise company, work my way up to eventually becoming a choreographer. This however hasn’t gone to plan, but I have had many wonderful experiences in the five years since I graduated.

Dance PhotographyDance PhotographyA session usually lasts around 1.5 hours, which is usually plenty of time to get what you need out of your session. Your photos will be uploaded to a private gallery where you can select the best photos from your shoot, I will fully enhance your chosen photos in both color and black and white, re-touching where necessary.

When I am dancing I feel truly content. That may seem like a really bland word but when I am not dancing I always feel my soul is restless. So once I’m dancing it is as though my soul is as one with my body. I’m carried away by the rhythm of the music and the steps of the dance.

When I am learning a new show or dance, every night after rehearsals before I go to sleep, I like to lie in bed with my eyes closed and run through the show in my head. I usually fall asleep on the second run through but I always wake up feeling confident I know the steps. On the day of a performance, I always have a warm-up and stretch to make sure my body is ready to move and my one rule is never to think about the choreography. That may sound silly but in the past, I have gone over a few choreography seconds before going on stage and then second-guessed myself. Now I have confidence that I know the steps so I don’t let myself think about it beforehand, after all, if you don’t know it by then, you haven’t got time to learn it!

I would say my dance major is Commercial Jazz but I have a huge love for Tap dance (as old school as it is). I am not a very technical dancer, I don’t have long legs up by my ears and my height for jumps is rubbish! But I am a very good performer, I always use my face when dancing and commercial dance is my strongest style. I am, however, reasonably flexible.

Ealing Photographer

Since graduating I have done a variety of work. I first went to Cyprus for a winter contract which involved doing shows in various hotels around the island. Then when I came back I worked for Warner Leisure Hotels. Here I did some amazing shows! I had so many favourites here as I ended up working for them for three years. We did a show called Knights & Dames, the second half was all James Bond songs and we were dressed in shorts and a suit jacket and one number we had golden guns. I loved it because it was so sassy and sexy. I never got bored with that show. Another favourite of mine was the Blues Brothers Show which I had to sing & dance in but was so good for my stamina. We also did a Buble show which I got to do a tap dance in! I don’t think there was a show I didn’t like! After Warner’s I went to Italy to dance in a circus, my favourite part of that was when the couple did their snake act, we got to dance upon the ring while these snakes slithered on the floor below us. It was scary but fun!

When I got back I began working for Reyonce - a tribute to Beyoncé. This has been one of my all-time favourite jobs! Vicky who plays reyonce is amazing and was so lovely to work for. Her show was insane and all commercial dance so I was in my element. I would love to be a backing dancer for a music artist and dancing behind Vicky gave me such a buzz!

Recently I have also had the opportunity to choreograph my own shows, the choreography is something I would love to end up doing full time. Before I left Warner’s I choreographed two shows, an MJ show and a Queen show. I was so proud of both and the team I taught loved it. I then went to work for Sibiu Holiday Villages in France where I was choreographer and dance Captain so I got to create and perform my own shows. This was an amazing experience.

My favourite location that I have ever performed was actually during my time at Expressions when we performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It was so beautiful and huge and I can honestly say I will never forget performing there.

When I’m between contracts I try to attend classes or do my own workouts/stretches to keep my body in shape and also keep my picking up skills strong. During the last lockdown and this one, I’ve been lucky enough to do some online classes. I have auditioned for Mirage (entertainment for cruises) a few times so it has been the best thing to join their choreographer for online classes.

What type of dance do you do?

What tips would I give anyone wanting to get into professional dance? Hmm... I would say keep your mind open. You may leave training wanting one thing, but the industry is unpredictable and there are a lot of us all competing for the same thing. You have to take all opportunities.
All experience is a good experience. I have had a few bad experiences but looking back they were good because I learnt from them.

A huge tip is never to be afraid to speak up. I’m not going to say every contract is amazing, there are bad jobs out there (I’ve had a few), but you know your own worth so don’t stand for poor living conditions or low pay.
Do your research! Check the company online or on the hustle. See if anyone has posted about it. You don’t want to arrive in another country and find the job is not what you signed up for.

But most of all, enjoy every moment! You will make so many friends and memories from this career. It’s a small world but even smaller in this industry.

If I could change one thing about what I have done in my career it would be to have not needed an operation during my first year at Warner’s. It set my career plan back by a year. Obviously, this was out of my control but if I could change it I would so that I could’ve started auditioning again sooner. I wouldn’t change any of the jobs I’ve done good or bad because of the friends I have made along the way.

I want to thank Jessica for taking the time to write the guest blog for me. It's just super to hear about someone passion and love for dance. I think like anyone starting in career there is all going to be challenges that you need to overcome. But listen to your heart and make sure if your gut is telling you something follow that too as those are best to things to help you judge the situation. If you want to follow Jessica you can do so at Instagram

Epara Skincare  and Civilian Magazine editorial

Just after lockdown and got approached EPK media to conduct a photoshoot shoot for a local company Epara Skincare. I had never heard of them but when I meet the business creator Ozohu Adoh I was so inspired to hear the story of the business and learn more about the business and the dreams.   150486841150486841

Follow my journey through dance photography. It was great to be able to get out after lockdown and shoot with some amazing dancers. Dancers make everything appear so effortless, but dance shoots are hard work!  To capture that one perfect dance image might take twenty takes.  The dancer has to leap and jump and perform for almost two hours.

Working together with a dancer on their shoot is so rewarding.  Often dancers work in a troupe, so being the center stage on their own really makes a dancer shine.

Dance Photoshoot planning

Matty and Phoebe wanted a dance photoshoot outdoors with water involved, smoke, sun, and lavender so that’s what I created for them. Dance shoots can be long days and long sessions as it's about getting it right for those perfect shots. Once I had the ruff ideas of the type of shoot this help me plan the locations for the shoot. First, we had to make sure the weather was going to be good and it looks like that plan worked very easily at we just happened to pick the hottest week in England to do the shoot. So always remember the sun cream for the outdoor shoot.

Frensham Pond Park

Thanks, goodness, for the internet to help find a good location to do outdoor shoots. London can be a little limited on some types of locations but normally you can find it but it was nice to get back out and explore areas outside London.  So after my research, we started the day at 9 am. I meet at South Ealing station and headed out of London to location number one. The location was about 45 minutes from West London. The first location was Frensham Great Pond. It has some amazing woods and has a great little pond to use. Plan your day well as if we had got there later it might not have been as quiet as what it was like when we were leaving the pond but the good weather did bring out the people and the sun. See below some of the pictures from the pond at Fersham's great pond.

At the same time, we managed to get some pictures within the amazing woods in Frensham park

After a few hours at Frensham great pond, we headed back to London to Surrey. I have never been to some of the Lavender Fields in Surrey, I had seen and heard so many things about them and they lived up to the stuff I had heard about them. We got there at a busy time but still managed to find a quiet spot to shoot some outstanding photos. Sometimes it’s nice getting the people in the background just going about their day.  Remember to pay on the way into the fields so you don’t get into trouble. These dancers have some of the most amazing moves and strength to achieve the positions. Just have a look at the results

Battersea Park

So back to London for the next location which was the third of 4 and by the time we get to the third location, it was around 3 pm so we had already gone a good few hours for this dance photoshoot. We tried out some different locations on the Thames as a backdrop which was just the most amazing backdrop to have in the pictures. As we wanted to make sure our last location, we had time to chill and relax before the sun went down, we head off after a few hours

Primrose Hill | Ealing Photographer

So, the four and final location was Primrose Hill which is very popular with the views over London and the sunset in the background. I just love this location a little busy but can work if you find those little quiet spots on the hill. This location we wanted to use some colored smoke bombs to just do something little different from the other parts of the day. Smoke is great but you need to work out wind and direction. Also talking to the people around as the smoke will hit them and it just polite to advise them of this don’t like upsetting people. Have a look at some of the pictures taken from the Primrose Hill

London Photographer | Test Model Photoshoot https://www.photographybyginger.com/blog/2020/8/london-photographer-test-model-photoshoot Test Model Photoshoot

London Photographer

If you’re looking to get into the model and you don’t know where to start booking a test model photo shoot is always a good start. Why do this? In my experience, it helps you build confidence in front of the camera and allows you to try out some of those ideas you have in your head. You can be more creative on your own shoot, but if doing a booked job you will be limited as you will be booked and they will have a plan of action for your shoot.

Ealing Photographer

When looking at booking your shoot talk with your photographer before you book and see what’s the idea they might have for your shoot. Talk about style as that will help the photographer plan if it should be a studio or location. There are so many different types of locations that fit types of shoots. Living in London there are so many amazing different locations for photoshoots just be careful some you need permission or even permits as I have found out over the years.

Experienced London Photographer

Using an experienced photographer is always best but there is a new upcoming photographer out there willing to support you during your start out in the business, but they might not have the contacts to help build your portfolio

Model Photoshoot

Celebrate and empower yourself and that’s what these shots should be about. The modeling world is not an easier world but it’s a fun world. Whether you’re looking for a fitness photoshoot, model portfolio, cosplay photoshoot, or boudoir photoshoot, your images should be a great representation of your confidence and hard work.

Book a London photographer

Having the best pictures will really help you in the model market. This is your shop for people to buy you to support their product having the best pictures out there is a great shopfront to have you will get your pictures in digital format after one of the shoots you can always buy prints via my website as you night different size or you can ask me about packages that include print copies too.

What to wear on a photoshoot?

It’s your photoshoot and you should wear what you feel makes you stand out from the rest but also having some of the plainclothes is good as different casting will want to see different things from your photos. As you always going to be updating your photos as if you change your hairstyle you will need to get some photos at these times.  Makeup can be important too. Its sometimes always good to bring a friend to help you on the day to make sure you are happy with your style on outfits buy that should come from the photographer.

How long will the photo shoot last?

My packages are different the first one is just over 1.5 hours or 4 hours but again packages can be worked out if you feel you need less or more time to do your shoot. We can do this in the studio or get out and about in London location shoots are great if we get the weather to get out and shoot in London.

Lockdown https://www.photographybyginger.com/blog/2020/6/lockdown How has your lockdown been?

I've made some life-changing career decisions recently and just as did, COVID-19 hit the UK. This then changed my career choice very much as my photography was no longer going to be an option.  As we were put on lockdown, like the rest of the country, it got very boring very quickly in South Ealing. I thought about the ways that I could continue my photography and maybe raise some money for a good cause.  I had thought about doing if for the NHS, but they have many other people supporting them and I wanted to help other charities that may have been left behind at these strange times. That's when I came up with the idea of doing 'doorstep photoshoots', keeping social distancing in mind at all times. I was not going to take any money for this and have asked for the customer to donate to Marie Curie or other charities. (Most people donated to Marie Curie) Marie curie is very close to my heart as they looked after my mother in the last few months of her life. I will always have a special place for the Marie Curie Charity.

Ealing Photographer

When I set this up, I thought I would get around 10 people wanting to take part during these strange times, but I was totally overwhelmed with the response!  To date, I have done over 76 doorstep photoshoots. I have met some amazing families, learned that some kids actually miss school and most are just missing friends. I met babies that were only 2 weeks old and 7 babies born during the lockdown who will lovingly be known as our 'lockdown babies'. I met families who built bars in there back garden and called it lockdown. I met twins celebrating their birthday who share a love of football and rugby, and their little brother who was passionate about trains. The mother celebrating her 40th birthday and wanted something special to help remember the good during these trying times.  The family could not introduce their new baby to the relatives. The family that just moved to Ealing and could not get to know their neighbors. The family that gave me a bottle of GIN (my favorite!) The family that made pretzels and gave me one to take away (it tasted amazing!)  I have met families with all sorts or pets. Two shouts for the rabbits and new kittens that had been an addition to the family.

London Photographer

I want to thank everyone that has taken part in this project.  It has been a pleasure to meet you all and hear your stories about how you're dealing with COVID-19. The support of local businesses has been overwhelming to me. I do hope we get to meet over a coffee or my favorite drink, GIN, soon. I would also like to say we raised £1460.00 which is just so amazing I never thought I would make that much as I had set my target at £500 and we smashed that amount very quickly!

As we move into re-opening the business fully, it would be great to work with you all again.  If you wish to share the Blog and gallery with your friends and family, please do so.
